Schwechat – Flood Protection Zwölfaxing

Project Description:
The present project is part of a flood protection project for the “Laxenburg Drainage District“ and the adjoining Schwechat communities. The village of Zwölfaxing has been frequently subjected to severe flooding  due to the flooding risk of the Schwechat River (Frauenbach). Large areas of the community are marked in red in the hazardous zone report.

The tasks to be performed are primarily located in highly populated  residential areas with very limited space. The flood protection concept includes a total distance of 2.7 km for which diverse measures have been implemented.

- Building earth dams
- Building flood protection walls
- Mobile flood protection
- Building a warehouse for mobile components
- Expanding the waterway cross section to increase the drainage capacity
   Schwechat (Frauenbach)
- Building two structural barriers to reduce drainage volume resulting from lateral canals
- Draining polder areas - Pump systems, valve chambers and drains
- Building control rooms in the area of the retention walls
- Assisting with ecological support measures

Donau - Laber, Germany

Project Description:
WERNER CONSULT was commissioned for preparing the flooding danger- and risk maps for implementing the EU flood risk management-guidelines. The project area in Bavaria includes 53 km of the Donau River in the area of Deggendorf and Straubing and 13 distributaries to the Donau River.

Overall, these rivers are distributed over 22 2D models. WERNER CONSULT will create 13 new models, 9 existing models will be assessed and expanded if necessary.

The project’s final result is an extensive GIS project, which, in addition to the flooding extent, includes the verification of the water depth, water level position and flow speed. Further, the hydraulic status of all bridges as well as the remaining risk resulting from collapsed embankments must be determined.

Central and Upper Isar, Germany

Project Description:
WERNER CONSULT was commissioned for preparing the flooding danger and risk maps in Bavaria for the planning units of upper and central Isar. The bodies of water to be assessed and processed are bodies of water using existing two-dimensional flow regimes; in this case, additional flood risk areas for HQ100 und HQextreme, length approx. 280 km; especially for the Isar and the Loisach must be determined. New models, including river profile-, bridge- and weirs etc. must be designed. With the exception of the Isar, it includes small and medium size lateral streams (width of streams 2 m to 15 m), with sophisticated model quality requirements (channeled through heavily populated villages, diverse hydropower utilization, including secondary lines and weir facilities must be taken into consideration).

Kamp, Flood Protection Underflow, UVP

Project Description:
As a result of the devastating flood in 2002, a comprehensive floodwater-feasibility study, based on a hydrodynamic two-dimesional model was conducted. Due to the extensive longitudinal direction of the flood protection measures a environmental impact assessment-procedure had to be conducted. Within this scope, Werner Consult prepared several related specialist-contributions and implemented the complete project coordination. We handled the local construction supervision for the first construction segment, which included the restoration of the existing dams as well as erecting new dam segments. Detail- and implementation planning in the second construction segment is imperative for the new construction for dams on approx. 12.8 km.

Salzach, Flood Protection, City of Salzburg

Project Description:
Draft of all flood protection measures for the Salzach city-distance in Salzburg, starting at the river threshold up to the Hellbrunner Bridge. The challenges here are coordinating the measures with dense installation locations, the integration in the cultural world heritage of old town Salzburg, and the approval by the old town preservation committee, as well as the public services for a number of parties involved (neighboring residents, tourism etc.). The design of the protected objects was implemented in collaboration with architects and landscape designers.
